Mary Johnstone
Associate Partner, Head of Talent
Venables Bell + Partners
Mary joined VB+P in 2012, and since that time has dedicated herself to carrying out the agency’s ethos of doing right by its people. As Associate Partner, Head of Talent, she partners with Founder and Chairman Paul Venables to lead the agency’s Talent Team and develop programs and initiatives that foster a thriving, supportive, and inclusive company culture, and ensure that the agency team enjoys fulfilling, successful and balanced work lives.
Prior to VB+P, Mary oversaw Hal Riney & Partners’ 500 staffers across the country, and helped lead a smooth transition for the agency and its employees during Publicis’ buy out in 1998. She stayed on with the firm for 14 additional years and continued to shape its exceptional HR and talent programs, as well as consult with other Publicis agencies. She also did a stint at global human resources consulting firm Watson, Wyatt Worldwide, however quickly realized that creative agency environments were the better fit for her.
Mary started her career at Ingalls, Quinn & Johnson in Boston, and is a New England native. And although she has called the Bay Area home for nearly 25 years, she’s still likely to slip “chowdah,” “No-eastahs” and “wicked” into conversation. She values her family, humor, kindness, and a well-poured glass of red wine, and is respected for her generous heart and deep commitment to supporting others
